October is not yet two weeks old, but new record values have already been measured for the number of summer days. By the 10th of the month, there were already four days with at least 25 degrees in Eisenstadt, for example, according to an evaluation by Geosphere Austria. The previous record was three summer days, reached in four years, last in 2011.

There were two summer days each in the provincial capitals this year in St. Pölten, Linz City, Salzburg Airport, Freisaal, Innsbruck, Vienna, Hohe Warte and City Center. Graz and Bregenz had one day above 25 degrees Celsius in October; only Klagenfurt did not record a summer day.

New Austrian record
On October 3, 2023, there was a new Austria-wide record for October with 30.3 degrees in Langenlebarn (Lower Austria). On the same day, Upper Austria and Salzburg reached the exact value of the previous state record, with 28.6 degrees in Weyer and 28.3 degrees at Salzburg Airport. October 8, 2023, brought a new state record for October in Styria: 28.1 degrees in Bad Radkersburg.

“The most stable high-pressure weather, interrupted at most briefly by somewhat cooler days, also brings an unusually high number of summer days this October, i.e., days with at least 25 degrees,” said climatologist Alexander Orlik of Geosphere Austria. “By Tuesday, October 10, there had already been five summer days in Bruck an der Mur, for example, four in Gumpoldskirchen and Eisenstadt, and three in Imst,” the expert reported. He said that since it will remain hot until Saturday, there is a very high probability that the previous Austria-wide October record will be surpassed. “It stood at seven summer days in Windischgarsten in October 1942. There were six summer days in October 2011 at the weather stations Wagna-Leibnitz and Neusiedl am See, 1949 in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg and 1942 in Groß-Enzersdorf and Deutschlandsberg.”
Mild on the mountains
The weather is also extremely mild in the mountains at the moment. The temperatures are currently around ten degrees above the typical values for the season but should not reach the highest values measured so far in October. At 2,000 meters, the maximum values until Saturday are ten to 16 degrees, and at 3,000 meters, at two to six degrees. By comparison, the highest temperature measured in October at Patscherkofel (2,251 meters above sea level) was 17.9 degrees on October 1, 1956. At Sonnblick (3,109 meters above sea level), 10.0 degrees were measured in October 1966.

According to the forecast, the summery weather will end on Sunday. It will remain hot until Saturday, with highs in many regions above 25 degrees. On Sunday, significantly cooler air will flow into Austria from the northwest. Next week, temperatures should settle somewhat in the range typical for October. In the lowlands of Austria, average early temperatures in mid-October in recent decades have been around four to eleven degrees and afternoon temperatures around ten to 18 degrees.
